How it works

From an empty vault to a household that runs itself

Four steps, none of which need a free weekend. Most families are usefully set up on the first evening and finish the detail over the following weeks.

The four steps

  1. 1

    Create your household

Sign up with your email, confirm the verification link, and give your vault a name your family will recognize — usually the household or the address. There is no public directory and no profile to fill in; the household exists only for the people you invite.

Create your household screen with a field to name your vault and an email verification step
  2. 2

Fill it in at your own pace

Begin with the categories you would miss first, whether that is insurance, medical details or the house. You can load sample data to see what a complete vault looks like before you commit, and attach scans, photos and PDFs to each entry as you go.

  3. 3

Invite the people who need it

Add family members by email and grant each one access to only the categories you choose. Everyone signs in as themselves, so you can widen, narrow or withdraw access later without changing a shared password.

Access settings listing family members with per-category permission toggles
  4. 4

    Let it work quietly

Once dates are in, renewal reminders, the household calendar and the subscribable feed keep themselves current. The emergency sheet rebuilds whenever the underlying records change, so the printed copy on the fridge is the only thing you need to refresh.

What happens on day one

A realistic picture of a first day, for a household starting from a drawer of paperwork and a few emails.

  1. First 5 minutes

Sign up, verify your email and name the household. The vault is live and empty.

  2. Next 15 minutes

Add the three records you would most hate to lose — usually a life policy, health cover and the house.

  3. Before lunch

Upload the documents you already have as scans or photos, and attach them to those entries.

  4. That evening

Enter the renewal dates you know, and let the calendar and reminders take them from there.

  5. Within the week

Invite your partner or an adult child, grant the categories that make sense, and print the first emergency sheet.
